Should I Take My Puppy to Puppy School?

Bringing home a puppy is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming.

Puppy biting, toilet accidents, chewing, jumping and not listening are all really common in the first few months.

That’s where puppy school can help.

What do puppies learn at puppy school?

Puppy school isn’t just about teaching sit and stay.

A good puppy class should help with everyday puppy life, including:

  • Puppy biting and chewing

  • Toilet training

  • Recall

  • Walking on lead

  • Settling

  • Handling and grooming

  • Puppy body language

  • Socialisation

  • Building confidence around new people, dogs and environments

A big part of puppy school is also teaching you how to understand your puppy and what to practise at home.

When should puppies start puppy school?

The earlier you can safely start, the better.

My Puppy School in Preston is for puppies aged 8–15 weeks when they start the course.

This is an important age for socialisation and helping your puppy learn that new people, sounds, dogs and environments are safe.

Puppies do not need to meet every dog or person. Good socialisation is about positive experiences without overwhelming them.

Does my puppy need to be fully vaccinated?

For our puppy classes, puppies need to have had at least their first vaccination.

Early socialisation is important, but it should still be done safely. Avoid high-risk areas such as busy dog parks until your vet says your puppy is ready.

Is puppy school worth it?

For most new puppy parents, yes.

It gives you support during those first few months and helps you build good habits early.

You’ll learn how to communicate with your puppy, reward the behaviours you want and help them grow into a confident dog.
